From the field to the lab

On 28 April 2025, activists of the Scientific and Medical Department of the Volunteer Centre of Dagestan State Medical University organised a lecture in the Morphology Building on the topic: ‘The effect of agricultural pesticides of the Republic of Dagestan on the hair condition of mice in experiment’.

The speaker was Milana Gadzhimuradova, a second-year resident of the speciality ‘Dermatovenerology’.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of pesticides used in agriculture in Dagestan on the growth and structure of wool in laboratory mice.

The workshop discussed the types of pesticides, their use in the agro-sector and household, their impact on living organisms, including humans, and the biochemical changes caused. ‘Pesticides are chemical or biological agents designed to kill, repel or suppress pests that can cause damage to agriculture, ecosystems and human health,’ Milana Maratovna emphasised.

In the process of experimental work two groups of rodents were studied: one was exposed to pesticides, the other served as a control group. Visual and histological changes in the hair cover were recorded at different stages of the study.

Volunteers evaluated the results, which were alarming: the mice exposed to pesticides showed alopecia (hair loss), thinning of hair shafts and slower regeneration. These data confirm the negative impact of agrochemicals on the animal organism.

The lecture was followed by a discussion in which students asked questions about the methodology of the experiment, possible long-term effects and alternative ways of crop protection.

The Volunteer Centre expresses its sincere gratitude to Milana Hajimuradova for her research, clear presentation and willingness to share her valuable knowledge. We hope that such events will contribute to raising environmental awareness and developing a scientific approach to solving urgent problems.
